Busan Gamcheon Culture Village

Busan is the second largest city in South Korea about 325 km southeast of Seoul.

Along Came Some Facts:

During the Korean War, refugees fled for safety to Busan, the only area of the peninsula that remained free from fighting. Quickly, the population of Busan spiked from 880K to 1.4 million. About 4,000 people moved to Gamcheon village, erecting some 800 makeshift homes using scrap iron, wood and rocks.

That being said, the village today has turned a dark beginning into brightness and beauty. Lined with souvenir shops, cafes, and walls colored with murals, the village brings colorful energy the moment you enter.

Getting there:

  • Subway & Bus:
    • Take Subway Line 1 to Toseong Station and come out through Exit 6. Turn right upon exiting until you see the hospital on your right. Right in front of the hospital will be a bus stop. You can take either Bus 2 or 2-2 and this will take you to Gamcheon Culture Village at top of the hill.
  • Taxi:
    • You can either show a taxi driver the actual name in Hangul :감천문화마을  or the address: 감천2동. You’ll should go up an extremely steep hill and if you do, you’re in the right place.

Now that we’ve gotten through the logistics, let’s enjoy some photos, shall we?

If you’re ever in South Korea in the warmer months, I strongly recommend taking some time visiting the area of Busan and Gamcheon Culture Village. Happy traveling!
